Double Red Sweet Corn

I'm getting carried away with red corn! Double Red sown a few days ago and I'm hoping it will start showing through very soon. I've my fingers crossed as I'd like to be saving seed for these this year, I've sown pretty much all the seeds I have (seeds were from Horizon Herbs a couple of years ago)

I'll stick this here and it can get moved to different spot later on.

Double Red corn seeds, they are just such a lovely dark red much deeper in colour than Ruby Queen F1. Double Red is bred by Alan Kapuler (Peace Seeds)

Germination not as good as I'd hoped for but I'm still hopeful there will be enough good plants so I can save seed.

I finished planting out Double Red a couple of days ago, they are looking a bit spindly and sorry for themselves, having a fair battering by the wind didn't help either. There are not quite as many as I'd hoped, but still should be ok and hope to save seed later on. I did water them in as it is so dry, we are forecast rain at the weekend, which is needed.

What a great looking block of sweetcorn. And I have soil envy! Yours looks soft and crumbly. Good luck with them!

I'm chuffed, soil is mostly good in the new veggie plot I started this year, a good depth of top soil and only one patch that is overly stony. On the flip side loads of weed seeds, wire worn and leatherjackets, but they'll reduce over time and I'm loving it

Finally after a bit of a sulk they seem to be settling in and growing, although the ones on the left are still a little behind. They were planted 4 or 5 days later than the rest as it got too too windy and wet to finish planting them in that stormy weather we had recently.

My Double Red sweet corn seems to be taking ages to grow, I think me being a bit impatient doesn't help!

Not just the stems, look at those leaf colours - exquisite Lets hope they hurry up a bit!

I hope so or the other corn will have caught them up!

I've a little patch of different varieties I wanted to cross pollinate with each other and I thought a month behind was enough of a gap, but looks like I might be wrong. One, Martian Jewels is coming on very strong, I think Alan Kapuler bred this from Double Red. If the two do clash I can always bag Martian Jewels tassels, I don't mind if some of the Double Red pollen mixes with them, I have some in the mix anyway.

I haven't planted out my last patch of corn, they are hardening off. They are going to be quite late so fingers crossed, although they are an early variety Damaun -Sativa Early. I don't usually grow a super sweet variety but they do sound good and as they are open pollinated I couldn't resist.

Too early for silks yet.
The leaves show quite a variety in colours, some are very red others nearly all green. All the stems are red though.

Plants have matured at around the 4-5' height, a few have lodged in the windy weather we have had recently, but otherwise they look fairly healthy. It's a bit of a gutter it's been so wet and windy just as they started to silk, fingers crossed.
