  • Sugar Magnolia (sugar snap)

I've grown this variety before and they are very lovely, both to look at and eat. The plants have made tall vines, producing a good crop of sweet pods. This year I'm growing seeds from two different sources and have two types of peas growing, one regular looking type and the other with hyper tendrils.

Can't wait to see your pod pictures when they ripen.

I'm wondering how similar the purple pods will be from the two sources.

Knots of tendrils, some also look to be tinged red.

Here's a couple of pictures of the leafy sort in comparison.

Hmm, that's one of the ones with extra leaflets instead of tendrils, right?

That's caused by a gene called tl, if you're interested.

Yes. Both the 'leafy' ones are from the same source and it's the type I've grown previously.

do the leafy ones (acacia type) not have tendrils at all?

I see. A couple of my experimentals have foliage like that, and it's a bit weird but fun. I think it's sometimes called "acacia leaf".

At the moment most of the leafy ones are just leaf in place of tendrils, although I noticed one or two are extended leafy as in the picture above but end with a few tendrils. It's a lot harder keeping them upright especially in the windy conditions we are having of late!
