My Father used a rather impressive (aka scary) paraffin-fuelled flame gun. He used to zap them whenever they appeared. Didn't remove but did control it.

it's definitely what he had. He also had a butane fuelled small one for his greenhouse (much muc tamer) but that was really useless in garden.
